This isn’t a travel guide assembled from search results. These are my own notes from more than twenty countries, from Vienna to Uganda, twice across Europe by bicycle, camera in the bag and no film crew behind me.
It’s the checklist I use for photo trips, but almost nothing in it is specific to photography. Packing, safety, water, people, what to do when something goes wrong, that part works the same whether you’re carrying a camera, a backpack or a set of panniers.
What’s in here are the things you normally only learn after something has gone wrong once: why you locate the emergency exits before you need them. Why your eyes need 20 minutes to adjust to darkness. Why you ask locals, but only after you’ve built a real connection first.
